Frassenhütte in the early morning

Hiking Tour Lechquellen and Verwall

Day 2: Frassenhütte - Freiburger Hütte

On the Gamsfreiheit

View on Verwall from Freiburger Hütte

After a very good sleep (the car trip to Austria was tiring) we leave the Frassenhütte and head eastwards. The rain stopped this night and a lot of white clouds rise up from the valley. Good weather is on its way !

We take the high route over the Gamsfreiheit and Schwarze Furka. This is a wonderful hike. Very quiet, and a beautiful landscape. It is hard to catch this landscape on film, especially when I find out that the batteries of my camera are very low. The spare ones are also empty. Good start ! How am I going to shoot the 10 rolls of slide film now ?

On the Gamsfreiheit we meet some people from Raggal who got up early as well. The view is not that good, we are surrounded by large white clouds rising up, so it is not possible to see the Verwall mountains. The landscape is getting even more beautiful when we approach the Schwarze Furka. This is a completely abandoned area, only nature and us. Now, it’s not far any more to the Freiburger Hütte. A short but steep descend from the Schwarze Furka and another hour to the cabin.

When we arrive at the Freiburger Hütte we are very tired. This was a long walk and only slowly we are getting used to the heavy bag packs we are carrying with us.

The Freiburger Hütte differs much from the Frassen Hütte. It is much bigger and visited much more. The personnel is not very friendly, the food is not very good, but … they do sell CR123A Lithium batteries ! They also have a shower and we definitely need one … During dinner we notice that all clouds have disappeared. Hopefully this weather will hold on the rest of the week. When the sun sets, we go to sleep in this hiker-biker-mountain-motel.
